Network Rail drug and alcohol testing

How does Network Rail drug and alcohol testing work?

First, the test consists of a breath sample for the alcohol analysis, and a urine sample for the drug screen and confirmation. Also known as a PTS drug test, the Network Rail drug and alcohol test appointment is coordinated by our head office in Manchester. The sample collection appointment can be booked for 1 individual, or we can perform on-site testing for up to 30 employees in a day. Finally, once the analysis is complete, the results are uploaded to Network Rail’s Sentinel system.

Frequently Asked Questions

What ID is required for Network Rail drug and alcohol testing?

Prior to your Network Rail drug and alcohol test appointment, we will require the following information from you:

  1. Sponsor name
  2. Sponsor contact number
  3. Sponsor email address
  4. Sentinel number (if applicable)

We will need to see official current photo identification at the sample collection appointment. Acceptable forms of ID include current passport, driving licence or Sentinel card.

How long does it take for the urine drug test results?

Instant results are obtained when using the urine point of care test. Alternatively, laboratory screen results can be reported within 1 to 2 working days. If GC-MS confirmation testing is required, this can take up to a further 3 to 5 working days. However, this is normally 3 working days, unless we have a particularly high volume of samples to process. Also, if confirmation drug testing is required, then a medical review must take place by a Medical Review Officer (MRO). This is a step required by Network Rail to provide confirmation of a positive drug result. In addition, it provided safeguards with regards to any prescribed medication.

What is the cost of Network Rail drug and alcohol testing?

Details for examples of the prices can be found on the drug and alcohol testing prices page. For example, and depending on how many people attend one appointment, the costs can be as low as £60 per person. This would also include the breath alcohol test.

What is the alcohol cut-off level for the breath test?

The cut-off level for alcohol is expressed as anything above 13 Micrograms of alcohol per one hundred millilitres of breath, or 13μg/100ml. In other words, a reading of 14μg/100ml or above will mean a fail.

What happens if I fail a Network Rail drug and alcohol test?

The consequences can be severe and include a 5-year ban from working in the rail industry. However, the testing process is fair and transparent. In addition, it provides you with the opportunity to organise your urine B sample to be tested at another RISQS accredited laboratory. Please note, this additional service is organised and paid for by the test participant or their sponsor.

There could also be cost implications to you or your sponsor. This could include the cost of the PTS drug test, PTS course costs and loss of earnings.
